    HTA: A Scalable High-Throughput Accelerator for Irregular HPC Workloads

    We propose a new architecture called HTA for high throughput irregular HPC applications with little data reuse. HTA reduces the contention within the memory system with the help of a partitioned memory controller that is amenable for 2.5D implementation using Silicon Photonics. In terms of scalability, HTA supports 4 × higher number of compute units compared to the state-of-the-art GPU systems. Our simulation-based evaluation on a representative set of HPC benchmarks shows that the proposed design reduces the queuing latency by 10% to 30%, and improves the variability in memory access latency by 10% to 60%. Our results show that the HTA improves the L1 miss penalty by 2.3 × to 5 × over GPUs. When compared to a multi-GPU system with the same number of compute units, our simulation results show that the HTA can provide up to 2 × speedup

    Silicon Photonic Flex-LIONS for Bandwidth-Reconfigurable Optical Interconnects

    This paper reports the first experimental demonstration of silicon photonic (SiPh) Flex-LIONS, a bandwidth-reconfigurable SiPh switching fabric based on wavelength routing in arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) and space switching. Compared with the state-of-the-art bandwidth-reconfigurable switching fabrics, Flex-LIONS architecture exhibits 21× less number of switching elements and 2.9× lower on-chip loss for 64 ports, which indicates significant improvements in scalability and energy efficiency. System experimental results carried out with an 8-port SiPh Flex-LIONS prototype demonstrate error-free one-to-eight multicast interconnection at 25 Gb/s and bandwidth reconfiguration from 25 Gb/s to 100 Gb/s between selected input and output ports. Besides, benchmarking simulation results show that Flex-LIONS can provide a 1.33× reduction in packet latency and >1.5× improvements in energy efficiency when replacing the core layer switches of Fat-Tree topologies with Flex-LIONS. Finally, we discuss the possibility of scaling Flex-LIONS up to N = 1024 ports (N = M × W) by arranging M^2 W-port Flex-LIONS in a Thin-CLOS architecture using W wavelengths

    Eye care utilization patterns in Tehran population: a population based cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to determine eye care visits which are an indicator of eye care service utilization by Tehran population and its determinants. METHODS: Through a population-based, cross-sectional study, 6497 Tehran citizens were sampled. All participants had complete eye examinations and an interview regarding demographic and socioeconomic status variables, past medical and eye history, and their previous and last eye care visits. RESULTS: Among those sampled, 4565 people participated in the study (response rate of 70.3%). Among these participants, 34.7 % had never visited an ophthalmologist or optometrist (95% confidence interval [CI]: 32.4 to 36.9) and 43.2% had not seen an eye care provider in the last 5 years. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that men (OR = 1.30), younger participants (each year increase in age: OR = 0.98) and the less educated (each year increase in education: OR = 0.93) were more likely, and the visually impaired were less likely (OR = 0.41) to have neglected eye care. CONCLUSION: A large proportion of the population, including those in the high risk group who require eye care, has never utilized any eye care service. These data suggest that efforts have to be made to better understand the causes and to optimize the utilization of the available eye care services in the population

    LLM: Realizing Low-Latency Memory by Exploiting Embedded Silicon Photonics for Irregular Workloads

    As emerging workloads exhibit irregular memory access patterns with poor data reuse and locality, they would benefit from a DRAM that achieves low latency without sacrificing bandwidth and energy efficiency. We propose LLM (Low Latency Memory), a codesign of the DRAM microarchitecture, the memory controller and the LLC/DRAM interconnect by leveraging embedded silicon photonics in 2.5D/3D integrated system on chip. LLM relies on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)-based photonic interconnects to reduce the contention throughout the memory subsystem. LLM also increases the bank-level parallelism, eliminates bus conflicts by using dedicated optical data paths, and reduces the access energy per bit with shorter global bitlines and smaller row buffers. We evaluate the design space of LLM for a variety of synthetic benchmarks and representative graph workloads on a full-system simulator (gem5). LLM exhibits low memory access latency for traffics with both regular and irregular access patterns. For irregular traffic, LLM achieves high bandwidth utilization (over 80% peak throughput compared to 20% of HBM2.0). For real workloads, LLM achieves 3 × and 1.8 × lower execution time compared to HBM2.0 and a state-of-the-art memory system with high memory level parallelism, respectively. This study also demonstrates that by reducing queuing on the data path, LLM can achieve on average 3.4 × lower memory latency variation compared to HBM2.0

    Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Thin Ply Hybrid Composites Under Repeated Quasi-static Tensile Loading

    This paper investigates the applicability of the acoustic emission (AE) technique for identification of the damage onset and accumulation in S-Glass/TR30-Carbon hybrid laminates under repeated quasi-static tensile loading. The samples were made of 2 layers of unidirectional thin carbon prepreg plies which were sandwiched between 2 standard thickness S-glass prepreg plies. Analysis of the AE results shows that there are two types of events regarding the AE parameters; those with high values of energy and amplitude, and low values which are assumed to be related to the fragmentation of the carbon layer and delamination of the carbon/glass interface, respectively. There are more friction related AE signals during the unloading stage than the loading stage due to collision and rubbing between existing crack faces. Increasing the strain level increases the number of fragmentations and the AE technique is able to quantify this. It is concluded that the AE technique can be used to evaluate the number of fragmentations and can identify the damage evolution of the hybrid laminate under repeated quasi-static tensile loading

    Overlap-based undersampling method for classification of imbalanced medical datasets.

    Early diagnosis of some life-threatening diseases such as cancers and heart is crucial for effective treatments. Supervised machine learning has proved to be a very useful tool to serve this purpose. Historical data of patients including clinical and demographic information is used for training learning algorithms. This builds predictive models that provide initial diagnoses. However, in the medical domain, it is common to have the positive class under-represented in a dataset. In such a scenario, a typical learning algorithm tends to be biased towards the negative class, which is the majority class, and misclassify positive cases. This is known as the class imbalance problem. In this paper, a framework for predictive diagnostics of diseases with imbalanced records is presented. To reduce the classification bias, we propose the usage of an overlap-based undersampling method to improve the visibility of minority class samples in the region where the two classes overlap. This is achieved by detecting and removing negative class instances from the overlapping region. This will improve class separability in the data space. Experimental results show achievement of high accuracy in the positive class, which is highly preferable in the medical domain, while good trade-offs between sensitivity and specificity were obtained. Results also show that the method often outperformed other state-of-the-art and well-established techniques

    The effects of vitamin D supplementation on interictal serum levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in episodic migraine patients: Post hoc analysis of a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial

    Background: Emerging evidence showed promising effects of vitamin D on headaches characteristics. Thus, it seems there is still a need for more researches to clarify the mechanisms by which this vitamin exerts anti-migraine effects. Methods: The present study was conducted as a 16-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial on 80 episodic migraine patients allocated in 2 parallel groups each consisted of 40 patients who received vitamin D 2000 IU/d or placebo. At baseline and after the intervention completion, headache diaries and migraine disability assessment questionnaire (MIDAS) were used to assess migraine related variables in patients. Also, interictal serum concentration of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) (as the dominant mediator of migraine pain pathogenesis) was evaluated using ELISA method. Results: The mean (SD) of age in the vitamin D and placebo groups was 37 (8) and 38 (12) years, respectively. ANCOVA test adjusted for baseline values, and confounders showed vitamin D supplementation resulted in a significant improvement in MIDAS score after 12 weeks in the intervention group (21.49 (16.22-26.77)) compared to placebo (31.16 (25.51-36.82) P value: 0.016). Moreover, after controlling for baseline levels, and other variables using ANCOVA, CGRP level was appeared to be significantly lower following vitamin D supplementation (153.26 (133.03-173.49) ng/L) than the patients in the placebo arm (188.35 (167.15-209.54) ng/L) (P value = 0.022). Conclusion: According to the current findings, vitamin D supplementation in episodic migraineurs, particularly in those with migraine with aura, may potentially improve migraine headache characteristics and disability probably through attenuating CGRP levels. Therefore, these results could provide a new insight into anti-nociceptive effects of vitamin D; however, more studies are required to confirm our findings.     Proteomics identifies neddylation as a potential therapy target in small intestinal neuroendocrine tumors.

    Patients with small intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (SI-NETs) frequently develop spread disease; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms of disease progression are not known and effective preventive treatment strategies are lacking. Here, protein expression profiling was performed by HiRIEF-LC-MS in 14 primary SI-NETs from patients with and without liver metastases detected at the time of surgery and initial treatment. Among differentially expressed proteins, overexpression of the ubiquitin-like protein NEDD8 was identified in samples from patients with liver metastasis. Further, NEDD8 correlation analysis indicated co-expression with RBX1, a key component in cullin-RING ubiquitin ligases (CRLs). In vitro inhibition of neddylation with the therapeutic agent pevonedistat (MLN4924) resulted in a dramatic decrease of proliferation in SI-NET cell lines. Subsequent mass spectrometry-based proteomics analysis of pevonedistat effects and effects of the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib revealed stabilization of multiple targets of CRLs including p27, an established tumor suppressor in SI-NET. Silencing of NEDD8 and RBX1 using siRNA resulted in a stabilization of p27, suggesting that the cellular levels of NEDD8 and RBX1 affect CRL activity. Inhibition of CRL activity, by either NEDD8/RBX1 silencing or pevonedistat treatment of cells resulted in induction of apoptosis that could be partially rescued by siRNA-based silencing of p27. Differential expression of both p27 and NEDD8 was confirmed in a second cohort of SI-NET using immunohistochemistry. Collectively, these findings suggest a role for CRLs and the ubiquitin proteasome system in suppression of p27 in SI-NET, and inhibition of neddylation as a putative therapeutic strategy in SI-NET
